Dear Graduates of the Class of '59 (my favorite): This is your principal, Roger Derthick, writing to you from the Great Beyond, in answer to the prayers and lamentations of your hard-working 50th Reunion Committee. Now see here, kids--for you are all still kids to me-- I hear that many of you (and I'd hate to call names) have not yet become serious enough about sending in your money and making your plans for the greatest Grady event in your entire lives, next to graduation: your one and only 50th Class Reunion. And time is growing short. See, you and your classmates are part of that special and elite generation called "Warbabies", far superior in all respects to the irresponsible "Baby Boomer" riff-raff that came later. The Boomers look to you for leadership. When the trumpet sounds, you are the ones who always rise to the occasion. And the trumpet is sounding now. Here's what you need to know: Reunion Weekend starts on Friday, May 1st, with a casual Varsity catered party, plus beer and wine from 6 to 9 pm at Garden Hills Recreation Center, 330 Pinetree Drive. The website, www.Gardenhillspool.com includes directions. The next and main event will be on Saturday the 2nd from 6 to 11p.m. at 103 West, an upscale Pano and Paul's restaurant at 103 W. Paces Ferry Rd. NW. Cocktail hour with a cash bar is 6:30 to 7:30, followed by a fine meal, an entertaining program and dancing. Dress will be upscale-casual. The website www.Buckheadrestaurants.com includes directions and a map. Following dinner, three of your more theatrical classmates, Dana Ivey, Eddie Lee and Bill Hedgepeth, will present humorous commentary on various members of the class. For this purpose, they need a few colorful details of your post-Grady life. Please provide some material to work with. If you don't, you risk being mocked and lampooned without restraint. So send your stories to Bill Hedgepeth at 8658 Old Dial Road, Blue Ridge, GA 30513, or email to hedgepeth@tds.net or call him at 706-838-4048. Or else watch out!! The bargain price for this reunion extravaganza is $125 per person, $250 per couple. Please immediately dash off your check, payable to "Grady Class of 1959 Reunion", to Bob Strickland at 509 Takely Drive in Lawrenceville, GA 30045. Feel free to call him at 770-995-0550 if you have any questions. For those needing accommodations, Intercontinental Hotel Buckhead has rooms for the Grady Reunion. Their rate is $159.00 per night, single or double. Call 1-800-235-4670. Also there's Hampton Inn Buckhead at $79.00 per night plus free shuttle to 103 West, 1-404-233-5656. Reservation deadlines are March 31st. Mention the Grady Reunion. Finally, instead of a printed bio pamphlet there is a Class of 1959 website, which you can access at www.erk59.com. Please send website designer, Brenda Korte, at brenda@rabunwebdesigns.com any digital photos you want to share as well as your address and contact details, along with whatever you'd like everyone to know about how you've spent these past 50 years. Use the reference "erk59" and Brenda will put your info on the website. Now, happy as I am to be addressing you after all these years, I must warn you that a failure to act by April 20th might result in a session of detention with Mr. Rufus Godwin, whose Room 1010 today makes Abu Ghraib look like Club Med. You don't want to go there. Instead, join me -- "Mr. School Spirit" you used to call me--at your great 50th reunion. I may not be there in the flesh, but my spirit will surely be drifting among you and will silently whisper into every ear, "Grady Forever!" R.H. Derthick |
